Generally for registered members. If you have any suggestions feel free to comment on this post or e-mail me through the Contact form. Just trying out some new features and seeing what else can be added.

IM/General Chat

An IM/General chat has been added to self-injury.net. You will be able to use an on-site IM to chat with other online users, either individually or by clicking on 'General' for a multi-user IM room. It's very basic because the full-featured/hosted chat is available through the forum and I wanted something Facebook-like.

To use the IM/General chat click the button that says 'Chat with Other Online Users' in the gray bar at the bottom of the page.  It will bring up two boxes, available users to chat with and the IM/chat box itself. Just type your message into the input field and press enter.

Meebo Chat

Meebo chat powered one-to-one chats have been added to profiles for registered users. The other user needs to have created a Meebo chat widget through meebo me.

You need to be on the other user's profile and it is a bit like Facebook chat. Click on 'Chat With Me' and the chat box will slide up. It will tell you if the user is logged in and, if they're not, you'll be able to leave a message.

Multi-User & Full-Featured Chat

There is a multi-user & full-featured chat on the Forum for registered users. You need 10 posts on the forum to be able to chat there.

Instructions for Meebo Chat

To add Meebo chat to your profile go to http://www.meebome.com/ to get your meeboID (not your meebo username). Create your widget. You will get back some code that has this (amongst other things): "http://widget.meebo.com/mm.swf?HsolKYDDDSE". Take everything after swf? and before the end quotation and that is your meeboID. In this example, the meeboID would be: HsolKYDDDSE.

Go to 'My account' on self-injury.net and click 'Edit'. Then click the 'About Me' tab. There should be a box for your meeboID there.

Sign into Meebo and registered self-injury.net users will be able to chat with your directly from the site even if you're not surfing self-injury.net yourself.

User Relationships

You will now be able to define relationships between you and other users (e.g. friends, acquaintances, etc.). This allows for a quick list of the people you are friendly with on self-injury.net

Private Messages

Private messages have been added. You will be able to send and receive private messages from other users and you will also be able to choose to only accept messages from people you have defined user relationships with (change this setting in your 'My account' edit). You will also be able to tag & search these messages. You will also be able to block a user and receive an e-mail alert when a message is sent to you. By default, e-mail alert is turned off so go to 'Messages' in the sidebar on the left to turn it on. That is also where you will find your messages and where you will be able to send messages.

Invites

You will also be able to invite people to join self-injury.net. Either through the 'Invite a Friend' link -- you don't have to be a member for that one -- or your profile. Doing this, you'll be able to define the relationship between you and that other person if you are a member.

User Search/Old Usernames

This was added a few weeks ago. Up until then members were only allowed to search user names, not any of the user content. This was problematic for old members because member's old usernames from the old 'Self-Injury: A Struggle' were added into their profiles as a field. Since no user content could be searched people couldn't search for members whose creative works they had liked and who were on the new self-injury.net with a different username.

The search isn't as robust as it could be (won't search for partial words) but it does search any public member content.

Bookmarks

This was added a few weeks ago as well. You can now 'bookmark' content you like on self-injury.net and would like to read/view again. Instead of saving to your browser it saves to a list called 'My bookmarks' that you can view if you are logged in. That way, any of the artwork/poems/songs/etc. you like are easily found.
