Jokes about cutters.
You know what pisses me off? People making jokes about cutters. This happens frequently in my first hour class. Someone says something kinda mean to someone, but in a joking way, and someone else comes back and says "no she's gonna go home and cut herself" and the whole class cracks up...even the teacher. I know of at least two other people in that class besides me who hurt themselves. We don't laugh. We sit there as if no one said anything. We're too numb to do anything else, at least I know I am. I rarely talk to the other two, but I have enough in the past to know what they do.
I'm just tired of everyone and their shit. I've isolated myself from all but about 3 people at my school, and I like it better that way. I try to block everyone else out. If they talk to me, I get the conversation over as quick as possible. I just want out of high school. I need a place to hang out with my friends outside of school and somewhere other than my house. I wish I could drive. I can't wait until I can drive, I can drive myself to the store and buy razor blades whenever I want. I just want more freedom.

It especially irritates me
1 year () (Permalink)when people say tell jokes regarding people cutting "the wrong way" if they make horizontal cuts on their wrists. I find this very invalidating for people who are still struggling but aren't trying to kill themselves. Additionally, I've known people cut horizontally badly enough to kill themselves, so the statement isn't really accurate. I don't care if you freaking cut smiley faces. Cutting - in any manner - is cutting.

Even my friends used to do this
1 year () (Permalink)Even though they knew about me (at least my closest friends did), they still made jokes about people like us. It's not funny. Yes, we have problems. We know we do. It doesn't need to be rubbed in our faces though - that just worsens our problems. If someone jokingly taunts us we're not going to immediately run home and hurt ourselves. We have some strength. Ugh, people piss me off!
Animal abusers, homicidal maniacs, suicide bombers (although they have their own problems too), and then those "innocent" people who think it's funny to say "Awwwhhh, I'm emo, I hate myself, I'm gonna go cut my wrists now...I hate the world", and then they crack up....
Stupid world. :P

People can be so ignorant. I
1 year () (Permalink)People can be so ignorant. I understand this upsetting you. This frequently happens to me, people making jokes about "emo kids who cut themselves". These people do not understand that the person right next to them may be a cutter and they do not understand that they have genuine issues. I cannot tell you to just ignore it, because that is easier said then done. I feel I have not helpful advice for you other than pity those people, because they are to stupid to understand what they are saying. As for college, I have had quite a better experience at college than in high school. I think because in those years people become more exposed to the amount of cutters and self-injurers. They understand that it's a serious issue. I also agree with "odd static" that self-injury is often used as humor on T.V. and this is possibly why the ignorant people in your class make comments about it and find this type of behavior okay. You could also say something to these people, maybe you could say something about how it's a serious problem and it's not something people should joke about. Just like drug abuse or alcoholism. If you afraid that they will assume you cut, then maybe say that you know of someone who does this and it offends you. I am sorry that you have to deal with these types of people.

There's a lot of this at my
1 year () (Permalink)There's a lot of this at my school and it absolutely disgusts me. Those kids think they're hilarious, but in reality they're just ignorant, often insensitive jerks who can't understand what they haven't experienced. I try to ignore it, but it still gets to me. It's not like anything can stop it, though. Teachers don't listen and really aren't much better than the students, at least in my experience.
College does sound better, but I often catch myself wondering if college students are any better than the high schoolers. Some of those people never grow up.

Just curious
1 year () (Permalink)Does the class know about your SI or that of either of the other two Sis in it? If not, the recurring joke may not be as personal as you think. The very popular adult targeted cartoon "The Family Guy" has poked fun at self-injury twice that I know of. Once, the mother character - Lois - put a cigarette out on her arm after shoplifting or something to get an extra rush. The joke you keep hearing "No, she's going to go home and cut herself." is straight from another episode.
There's a daughter in the family named Meg that none of the other members like. I can't remember exactly what insult they throw at her, but her retort is "I don't do that anymore. I cut myself. Is that better?" in an angry sarcastic tone.
Anyway, if they don't know about your SI, they may just be repeating the inconsiderate humor of that show's writers. Maybe it's not something personal? Unfortunately, irreverence now passes for humor.

No, they don't know.
1 year () (Permalink)No, they don't know. I know it's nothing personal, but it pisses me off. I hate TV shows like that. I know I'll probably have to deal with it for the rest of my life, and it sucks. But that happens...
