Self-Injury: A Struggle

In Their Own Words:

"I'm in therapy now for 4-5 years, and before that I was hospitalized in a psych ward because I became a real danger to myself. So, yes, SI was the reason, although I was also suffering from major depression."

[female, age 24, began to SI at age 16 1/2]

"I've been inpatient 20 times in the past year, mainly for overdoses. I have received too many stitches to count for my cuts (29 at the moment)."

[female, age 19, began to SI at age 18]

"Oh, yes. When I was 15 I got picked up for underage consumption and they had to do a strip search and they saw like 30 fresh cuts in my wrist and flew me off to treatment the next day. About three weeks ago I decided to go for a vein and I had a field trip to the ER. They called someone from the mental health place to come talk to me and now I'm seeing a psychiatrist and counselor."

[female, age 24, began to SI at age 14]
