Hi all,

I am a trainee clinical psychologist based at Lancaster University in the UK. I am currently designing a study that aims to explore the types of imagery people who self injure experience in relation to self injury. If anyone would be interested I would like to share my study design and my interview procedure with you to gain your views on the research.

My hope is that I can create a study that promotes understanding and challenges stigma within society. It is really important to me that I have the help of people who actually self injure to help me achieve this, otherwise there may be things that I miss or haven't thought of, because I'm approaching the research mainly as a psychologist, not as someone who self injures.

I have compiled the expertise of people with first hand experience of self injury for other research and the input I have received has been invaluable. This research will eventually be presented at conferences and submitted to academic journals therefore any input you can give will go a long way and will encourage other researchers to do the same, which means future studies will improve. Anyone of any age can take part at this stage as it is not part of the actual research.

I am a professional freelance journalist working on a piece for Denver University Magazine about self-injury, its root causes, and common misperceptions about those who engage in it. The story centers around the new book, The Tender Cut: Inside The HIdden World of Self-Injury by Patricia and Peter Adler. I’m writing to tell you about an online research study related to the
experiences of young people who physically hurt themselves
(self-injure). Despite the prevalence of self-injury, very little
research has addressed the implications of self-injury for young
people, particularly those who may physically hurt themselves without
others knowing. In order to better help this population, we need to
learn from those who have tried to physically hurt themselves. The
knowledge we gain from your participation will have important
implications for understanding how to help those who physically hurt
themselves.

Individuals between the ages of 13-21 who have physically hurt
themselves are invited to participate.

This online study will take about 30 minutes of your time. You should
have access to a personal computer in a secure, distraction-free
environment.

Your answers to these questions will be completely anonymous and confidential.

03/01/2012 -- Self-Injury Awareness Day (SIAD)

A recent Australian study has found that 1 in 12 people self-injure during their teen years. 10% of these people will continue self-injuring into adulthood. Of these only 1 in 8 will be hospitalized. The same study found that self-injury is one of the most significant predictors of completed suicide. Of those who commit suicide about 50-60% had a known history of self-harm. That does not mean all self-injurers are suicidal or that acts of self-injury are suicide attempts and the same study admits that it does not know how many self-injurers have died due to suicide.

Recent research in the UK shows that of the 1,398 young people surveyed by ChildLine, selfharm.co.uk, YouthNet and YoungMinds more than half admitted to self-injuring daily or a few times a week.

With heavy statistics like these raising awareness of self-injury is important and the self-injury community and their supporters can show their support of Self-Injury Awareness Day by wearing orange or wearing an orange ribbon, wristband, or bracelet. Or by speaking out about self-injury and letting the world know that it's not a teenage problem, it's not a fad, it's a problem affecting people of all ages and from all walks of life. Read more »

I've decided that instead of waiting until I feel inspired to write mini-bios for Famous Self-Injurers I'm going to write a small brief and have some relevant links and quotes and then update with something more substantial. So I'll write another update here when I do that.
