SEEKING RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS - AGES 13-21

I’m writing to tell you about an online research study related to the
experiences of young people who physically hurt themselves
(self-injure).  Despite the prevalence of self-injury, very little
research has addressed the implications of self-injury for young
people, particularly those who may physically hurt themselves without
others knowing.  In order to better help this population, we need to
learn from those who have tried to physically hurt themselves.  The
knowledge we gain from your participation will have important
implications for understanding how to help those who physically hurt
themselves.

Individuals between the ages of 13-21 who have physically hurt
themselves are invited to participate.

This online study will take about 30 minutes of your time.  You should
have access to a personal computer in a secure, distraction-free
environment.

Your answers to these questions will be completely anonymous and confidential.

SEEKING RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS - AGES 13-21 in Research/Media: Call For Participants published by 1 year ago ()

2011/12/04 -- Chat, Quick Navigation, Famous Self-Injurers, Self-Injury Songs, Etc.

Since this didn't post on the front page (though it did in the feed) the chat is here -- http://self-injury.net/chat-room -- for registered chat members (message me if you're a registered member and want to be added). The old chat is available here -- http://self-injury.net/old-chat -- for those who prefer that. The old chat should be a chat bar on the bottom so the status update box on the side isn't it, if you've been confused why nobody is replying. :)

I've slowly been updating the Songs with small clips/samples of the song plus links to Amazon MP3 or iTunes plus a Youtube link to a video with the full song (if avaiable).

I've decided that instead of waiting until I feel inspired to write mini-bios for Famous Self-Injurers I'm going to write a small brief and have some relevant links and quotes and then update with something more substantial. So I'll write another update here when I do that.

The Quick Navigation and various things you can follow/subscribe to has been cleaned up and you should now get a smaller (rather than huge) popup when you click Quick Navigation plus small popups when you click Subscribe. Plus, the issue with the popup sometimes being empty has been fixed. Read more »

2011/12/09 -- Famous Self-Injurers (Russell Brand, Emilie Autumn, Darrell Hammond, Megan Fox), Self-Injury FAQ, Article

Famous Self-Injurers has had brief write-ups of Russell Brand, Emilie Autumn, Megan Fox, and Darrell Hammond.

The Self-Injury FAQ has had a correction made about organic self-injury in those with developmental disorders or who are on the autism spectrum. The 'What is self-injury?' section has had some edits and clarifications. Other various edits and corrections were made.

An excellent article on the stigma surrounding mental health was made in the Huffington post. I will also tweet/crosspost this link separately.

Why Do We Stigmatize This?

2011/12/08 -- self-injury.net Tumblr

I created a Tumblr for the site so if you have anything to submit or want me to reblog (if creative work or SI-related) just let me know. :)

2011-09-25 -- Update (Specific Site Changes) (relevant to researchers, as well)

Here are the changes the last update brought that are relevant to users (and for the last point, to researchers).

  1. You can now embed Youtube and Vimeo videos into your content (e.g. a blog entry), as well as Flickr pictures. Let me know what other image/video sites you'd like added to the list and I'll see if it's possible.
  2. New look for the editor plus it now loads up only when you click in the box. Clear your cache and/or do a hard refresh if it doesn't show.
  3. Navigation has changed to make it easier for members to find relevant sections.
  4. You can now subscribe to comments on a single status, statuses by a specific member, and/or statuses on a page.
  5. Now user profiles have a link where you can subscribe to content by that member.
  6. Think I've fixed the bug that would show unstyled (white background and just a mess) pages.
  7. The new Research/Media: Call For Participants article type for those looking for particpants in research regarding self-injury or for articles/etc. educating others on self-injury.

A new theme in dark colors will be created for the site though the light colored theme will remain the main one. I'm also looking into creating an app for those on smart phones so that keeping up-to-date on new content is easier.

2011-09-22 -- Changed a Few Things

I've changed a few things and, because of this, if the site is showing up strangely for you clear your browser's cache.

Still some stray ends to clear up but things seem to be working aside from a few odd image sizes here and there (which will go away).

08/18/2011 -- Self-Injury Questionnaire

Dear Participant,

You are invited to participate in a study looking at the effect of online peer support on the recovery from self-injury. The study is being conducted as part of the requirements of the postgraduate diploma of psychology. It will consist of a questionnaire designed to measure your current and past self-injury, views on online peer support, and motivations behind joining a self-injury recovery site.

The study is attempting to discover if self-injury recovery sites are helpful in the recovery process and to identify the main positive and negative factors of the sites.

08/18/2011 -- Hope And Hopelessness In Stories On Self-Injury: Invitation to take part in a research interview in London

Hello All,

I would like to invite you to take part in a face to face interview.

My name is Edyta and I am studying at City University in London. I am looking into self-injury as part of my research for my doctoral thesis. The widespread perception of self-injury places an emphasis on the negative aspects of the behaviour. However, there is also a less known view that constructs self-harm as a positive behaviour. Therefore, this research aims to explore the understanding of hope and hopelessness amongst individuals who injure themselves, and I am looking for people who would be willing to share their stories with me in a non-judgemental environment.

I am looking for people who are: Read more »
