To us at "self-injury.net" the protection of the privacy of the individuals who visit our site and of those who use our services is of utmost importance. The following discloses our information gathering and dissemination practices for this website.

Registration

In order to become a full member of our community, including the chat and bulletin board -- "Safe Haven" -- a user must first complete the registration form. During registration a user is required to give their e-mail address and verify that they are over thirteen. E-mail addresses are used to send the user their registration information. The age verification is used to comply with COPPA. It is optional for users to provide demographic information, occupation, alternate online ways to contact them (ICQ, AIM, YahooID, etc.), homepage, interests, birthday, etc. With the permission of the user, administrators and moderators can send the user e-mail notices. 

Cookies

Cookies are used on our bulletin board, "Safe Haven," the chat, and in the CMS that runs the site. A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's hard drive containing information about the user. Usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any personally identifiable information while on our site. Once the user closes their browser, the cookie simply terminates. For instance, by setting a cookie on our site, the user would not have to log in a password more than once, thereby saving time while on our site. If a user rejects the cookie, they may still use our site. The only drawback to this is that the user will be limited in some areas of our site. For example, the user will have to log in every time they use our bulletin board. Cookies can also enable us to track and target the interests of our users to enhance the experience on our site.

Log Files

Automatically record the IP address, referrer, browser-type, and domain of visitors. This information can not personally identify you. This site uses this information to analyze trends, to administer to the site, and gather broad demographic information for agreggate use.

Links

This site contains links to a number of other sites. Please be aware that "self-injury.net" is not responsible for the privacy practices of other sites. We strongly recommend that you read the privacy statements of any other site that gathers personally identifiable information. The privacy statement on this site applies only to "self-injury.net."

Surveys

This site has an ongoing "Self-Injury Survey." Participation in this survey is completely voluntary and users therefore have the choice whether or not to answer any of the questions. Before submitting the survey, the user has the choice to indicate whether or not they want their survey responses posted on "In Their Own Words... ," which is a collection of quotes from the mouths of self-injurers on different issues on or related to self-injury. They also have the choice to indicate whether or not they want any of their answers in the potential "Self-Injury Book." Users also have the choice to remove certain details from their answers to the survey questions.

Survey answers will be posted on "In Their Own Words..." if the user grants permission to this site to do so. It also may be used in the upcoming "Self-Injury Book" if the user grants permission to do so. Personally identifiable information, such as phone numbers, home addresses, full names, etc. will be removed at the discretion of the administrator to protect your privacy.

E-mail Postcards

Users who choose to send an e-mail postcard through our site are asked for their name and e-mail address and the name and e-mail address of the person they are sending the e-mail postcard to.

AIM/MSN/Yahoo! Lists

Users can choose to add themselves to lists of AIM, Yahoo!, and/or MSN usernames.

General Site Membership

Users can choose to sign up as a "self-injury.net" member so that they may submit written works, artwork, and/or videos. They may also suggest items to be added to the site. In their profile their AIM/MSN/Yahoo! usernames are optional to fill in, as are links to other personal, social networking and blogging sites such as LiveJournal, Twitter, etc.

Security

This website takes every precaution to protect our users' privacy. We do our best to prevent the loss, misuse, and alteration of any information under our care.

Choice/Opt-out

Our site provides users the opportunity to opt-out of receiving communications from us. Users can have the administrator remove their information from the site and/or our database to not receive future communications or to no longer receive our service.

Correction/Updating/Removing Personal Information

If a user's personally identifiable information changes (such as your e-mail address), or if a user no longer desires our service, we will endeavor to provide a way to correct, update or remove that user's personal data provided to us.

    Users of our site are always notified when their information is being collected by any outside parties. We do this so our users can make an informed choice as to whether they should proceed with services that require an outside party, or not.

Notification of Changes

If we decide to change our privacy policy, we will post those changes on our Homepage so our users are always aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under circumstances, if any, we disclose it. If at any point we decide to use personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time it was collected, we will notify users by way of an email. Users will have a choice as to whether or not we use their information in this different manner. We will use information in accordance with the privacy policy under which the information was collected.
