I use self-injury as this...distraction.  When you scratch just right, everything just goes away from your mind.  Every single thing.  I don't think about the things that led me to hurt myself in the first place.  I think about, woah, gotta go clean this up, and I have to cover it.  Which is also bad, because it adds a bit of stress to my life knowing that I have to cover them up.  It's better than what I was thinking before though.
