Vincent van Gogh
By Draco Malfoy,
The Dutch post-Impressionist painter still famous so many years later for his work suffered from what has been thought of as epileptic attacks or bipolar disorder or a variety of other potential diseases. It is still a topic of speculation amongst historians. What is known is that he suffered intense anxiety and mental health issues. He sometimes hallucinated, his insomnia was particularly terrible, he suffered fits. van Gogh was known for his excess in everything: drinking, smoking, coffee, fasting to the point of malnutrition.
His registered symptoms at the asylum he stayed at were: "poor digestion and a bad stomach, hallucinations, nightmares, stupor, absent mindedness, impotence, insomnia, and anxiety." He started mentioning suicide in his letters to his brother towards the end of his life.
van Gogh's famous act of self-harm was the severing of his left ear (it is unknown to what degree) with a razor, which led to severe hemorrhaging. He was said to have bandaged his wound and then sent the severed ear to a brothel he and a friend he'd had a falling out with, Gauguin, frequented. A local newspaper reported that van Gogh left the ear in the care of a prostitute and told her to guard the ear carefully. Gauguin had a different account which was that van Gogh left he ear in the car of a doorman to as a memento for Gauguin.
van Gogh died at age thirty-seven from a gunshot wound that most people feel was self-inflicted though there was no gun found on him.
