    Exam (2009)

    • The character, Dark, is a self-injurer.  At one point in the film, she is tied to a chair by one of her fellow test takers.  He chooses a sheet of paper as the torture tool for her interrogation and pushes her skirt up a little to cut her inner thigh with the paper’s edge.  When he does this, he finds her legs are already cut and makes light of her compulsion.  ”Oh, I see you already beat me to it.  What’s the matter, Daddy didn’t love you enough, so you become a psychiatrist hoping to find out why?”

The cuts are cuts, not scars.  Their bright red as if they were made that morning.  Makes sense considering the high pressure situation - she’s a high achiever going in to compete for a dream job against other high achievers - that she may have needed to calm her nerves before she left to take the test.

In passing, I like the way the actress continued after this event.  She’s freed.  Instantly, she stops crying, goes stone faced, puts her glasses back on, and is “herself” again.  Someone did their homework on the writing staff.
