    Martyrs (2008)

    • The Lucie Jurin character is a SI.  As a pre/teen girl, she was held prisoner and tortured.  She escapes her torturers, and while doing so, sees a woman being held in another room.  Lucie leaves the woman behind and gets away.  She feels extremely guilty about this, so she self-injures but imagines that it’s the woman she left behind, transformed into some unstoppable monster, attacking her instead of her attacking herself.  There are a number of visual references to SI, however, in all but two of the relevant scenes, the monster Lucie imagines is visible to the viewer. Most of the SI doesn’t look like SI.  It looks like a monster slashing at a young woman.

I should mention that this movie features a lot of violence.  Some DVD editions of it even come with a nervous apology from the director as an introduction to the film.  The main characters spend most of their time soaked in blood, there’s some violence against children, and there’s a lot of violence against women.  In fact, around 30 of the last 40 minutes are spent on a big man beating the Hell out of a tiny woman.  I’m not recommending this film; I’m just pointing out it’s use of SI.

Despite the brief and thankfully spoiler free description of the film here, this is no mere exploitation, horror or torture porn film.

Whilst aesthetically these concepts appear, the film really is a psychological and philosophical masterpiece, and the depictions of self harm and mental ilness are both believable and emotionally poignant.

I’ll say no more because, as anyone who has seen it knows, the less you know before seeing it the better, but if I can give any recommendation, it would be this; I really dislike horror films, and I’ve seen the classics and not enjoyed them, yet martyrs is my favourite film.

P.S the upcoming American remake is a disgrace to this film, again Hollywood making cheap money by tarnishing something unique and brilliant.
